Article : Jakarta Election Proceeds Smoothly, Peacefully

April 19 2017

After weeks of anxiety that partisan clashes or intimidation may mar the second round in Jakarta’s gubernatorial race, millions of Jakartans went to the polls on Wednesday without experiencing any serious problems.

As of 1 p.m., the official closing time for voting, no major incidents had been reported to the Jakarta Police or the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu).

Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama voted at Polling Station 54 near his residence in the Pantai Mutiara housing complex in North Jakarta at about 8 a.m., along with his wife Veronica Tan and son Nicholas Sean.

Ahok wore a blue shirt, while Veronica donned a white kebaya and Nicholas a white T-shirt. In the first round of the election on Feb. 15, Ahok and his family had worn his campaign’s signature red-and-blue plaid shirts.

After exercising his political right, Ahok called on Jakartans to do the same. “I call on Jakartans to not be afraid to go to polling stations, because each vote could determine the fate of Jakarta’s development,” Ahok said.

“Whatever your choice is, you should go to the polling stations. If you encounter hurdles while voting, please report them to the officials.”

Ahok’s rival, Anies Baswedan, meanwhile, voted in Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta. The former education and culture minister and his family arrived at the polling station at 11:00 a.m., three hours later than scheduled.

They were welcomed by dozens of volunteers and residents, who recited prayers as well as salawat (religious chants) for him. “Whatever the result is, we leave it to God. We are ready to win and to lose,” Anies said.

Hard-line Islamic groups have fomented sectarian sentiment against Ahok, a Christian of Chinese descent, since last year through a series of major rallies in the capital. Many of those who took part in the rallies are not from Jakarta.

The groups have announced to mobilize thousands of Muslims through a mobile application called Tamasya Al-Maidah (Al-Maidah Tour) to come to Jakarta and “guard” the city’s 13,032 polling booths against fraudulent activities.

Al-Maidah is a chapter in the Qur’an that contains a verse often used by conservative Muslims to urge Muslims not to vote for political leaders of another faith.

The National Police, however, have banned citizens from participating in the Al-Maidah Tour, saying it could trigger public unrest.

Al-Maidah Tour participants reportedly planned to gather at Istiqlal Mosque, but an official at the mosque, Abu Hurairah, told kompas.com that as of Wednesday afternoon, there had been no request for a permit from the organizers or the “tour.”

Islam Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab, a leading figure behind the anti-Ahok movement, said the election would be held fairly and transparently, so that the results did not lead to problems. “If the election is just and fair, God willing, the outcome will not cause problems,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.

Police deployed 66,000 officers to secure the election. As many as 2,400 Indonesian Military personnel from the Jakarta Military District Command (Kodam Jaya) and the West Java and Banten Military District Command (Kodam Siliwangi) are also set to be deployed in the event of an emergency.

Child BrideTEMPO.COJakarta - Rukayah held her crying 10 month-old son in an attempt to soothe him. Sitting beside her was her three-year-old daughter. At 20, Rukayah has been married three times. “I was 15 when I married the first time,” she told Tempo English last month.

Like many other villages in Central Lombok, Tanjung Karang Permai applies a special ‘curfew‘ just for teen girls. Getting home past curfew time is frowned upon by residents of this conservative, Muslim majority region.

When Rukayah was still in middle school, her 17  year-old boyfriend, whom she had known for only three weeks, took her home on his motorcycle past the curfew hour. Her parents saw and forced her to marry the boy before the neighbors started gossiping.

The wedding took place not long after and the young couple dropped out of school. Rukayah said they were not happy because they were too young. Neither had steady a job and had to be supported by their parents. “We got divorced within two years,” she said.

But being a young divorcée was no better for Rukayah. Worried their daughter might not be able to remarry if she stayed single too long, her parents encouraged her to accept the proposal of a neighbor who had asked for her hand. He was in his early 20s and Rukayah thought he could be reliable. She said yes.

A daughter soon came along, but their union did not last. She quickly discovered her husband was abusive. He would hit and kick her about whenever he got upset. “I could not stand it any longer and asked for a divorce,” she said.

Rukayah got married for the third time two years ago. She gave birth to her second child not long after. To support her children, she went to work as a domestic help in the village. Though still legally married, her third husband left her without providing for his newborn son.

Rukayah regrets not finishing school because it is proving hard for her to find a job with a good salary. “My parents are still helping me out. I’ve gone back to living with them,” she said.

Stories like Rukayah’s are common in rural West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). Although in Rukayah’s case, she was forced into marriage, many young teenage couples opt to marry early of their own accord. The community’s conservative attitude and a local tradition called merariq-the literal translation being ‘kidnapping the future bride’-are the main reasons for the practice.

Based on merariq custom, a boy can take a girl away from her house for a night, or at least past curfew. When that happens, the girl is obliged to marry the boy, or else the young couple is considered a disgrace to both families and the wider society. Though unintentional, Rukayah’s first marriage was the result of merariq as seen by her community.

This custom is the main reason Yayasan Tunas Alam Indonesia (the Indonesian Nature Foundation), going by it contracted name of Santai, initiated a campaign to raise the marriage age in NTB. Suharti, Santai’s director, said the foundation began work in the region in 2014 with the help of Oxfam, who provided funding and technical assistance.

Santai, which was established in 1986, began devising a strategy to combat the practice of too early marriage. The foundation decided the most effective approach would be to apply a village customary law, an awigawig. “Awigawig is usually drafted by the community and all the villagers are compelled to abide by it,” she said.

It was not easy at first. Most child marriages are enacted as soon as the bride or groom reach 16, the legal age for females to get married under Law No. 1/1974 on Marriage. But in contradiction, Law No. 23/2002 on Child Protection considers youngsters below the age of 18 as still children.

For their pilot, Santai approached local religious leaders in Kekait village, to get them to initiate an awigawig. They cited their recent survey, which showed that in the past 10 years, 139 child marriages had occurred in Kekait.

Santai also pointed out how child marriages proved to not last long. Their statistics showed, around 50 percent of early marriages ended in divorce. Suharti noted one case where a couple was married for exactly one night.

“It took almost a year to raise the community’s awareness. Finally some people started to agree that the minimum marital age should indeed be increased,” related Suharti.

To bolster their campaign, Santai initiated the Youth Forum for Increasing Marriage Age (Forum Pemuda Peduli Pendewasaan Usia Anak) to get the support of teenagers, the most vulnerable group in the issue. Santai and the forum held regular group sessions to discuss the importance of teens completing their education and not going into too-early marriage. (*)

Article : Jokowi Unveils Eight New Mobile Power Plants

Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo unveiled eight mobile power plants with a collective capacity of 500 megawatts, on Saturday (19/03) in a bid to make good on his commitment to provide affordable electricity for all Indonesians.

Jokowi marked the start of operations for the power plants at the inauguration ceremony of the mobile power plant in Mempawah, West Kalimantan, over the weekened. Other power plants that will begin operations include Jeranjang-Lombok and Air Anyir-Bangka, each with a capacity of 2×25 megawatts; Tarahan-Lampung and Pontianak with a 4×25 MW capacity each; Balai Pungut-Riau and Paya Pasir-Medan, with 3×25 MW capacity each and Suge-Belitung and Nias, with a capacity of 1×25 MW each.

“Today, I have inaugurated gas-powered mobile power plants with a total power capacity of 500 megawatts at eight different locations. Our people need electricity for industry, factories, the tourism sector and also households. They are still waiting to get electricity,” Jokowi said during the ceremony.

“The reason we quickly built the power plants is because of residents’ overwhelming complaints that there is a lack of electricity in every province, city and district across our country. Why did we choose to build mobile power plants? Because they are faster to build. If we built coal-powered plants, it would have taken four to five years. But this, we can build this one fast,” he added.

The central government believes that the additional plants will help power up to 100,000 households across the archipelago. The plants, according to the government, will also play a key role in accelerating economic growth and development in some of the country’s most outlying provinces.

Jokowi recently inaugurated six megaprojects in various provinces, including the Air Anyir floating gas power plant in the Bangka-Belitung Islands.

The president also opened two new units of a geothermal power station in Minahasa, North Sulawesi, in December last year and an additional unit at a power plant in Lampung, South Sumatra.

Indonesia has received financial investments from various foreign institutions, including the Islamic Development Bank, which approved a $330 million loan to state utility company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to expand power transmission infrastructure in Java, Bali, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

That project will provide an additional 10,135-megavolt ampere, which contributes to the government’s ambitious 35,000-megawatt power plant construction program set to be completed by 2019.

indonesia as gastronomy country

Article : Indonesia potential to become world’s largest gastronomy country

29 March 2017

Jakarta (ANTARA News) – Indonesia is potential to break into the ranks of worlds largest gastronomy countries with a number of supporting factors it has, an expert has said.

“Very likely with its varieties of fauna and flora in addition to its cultures and culinary,” Chairman of the Indonesian Gastronomy Academy (AGI) Vita Datau Mesakh said here on Wednesday.

Vita said gastronomy, an art and practice of cooking and eating good food, is closely related to area or place, identity and culture.

“We can see gastronomy from the view point of food & landscape. With that point of view we would get social, cultural, political, economic or historical descriptions through food,” she said.

Lately, fast growth has been recorded in the number of tourists and intensity in promoting tourist destinations and their food identities for commercial and tourism interests.

“Selling and promoting all types of food will need creativity such as in the processing and marketing of food products. In this context, tourism especially gastronomy tourism is an effective trigger,” she said.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya opened the second National Gastronomy Dialog and Wakatobi Culinary Promotion at the Sapta Pesona building of the Tourism Ministry here.

“We could replicate the U.S. method of creating and commercializing something such as digitalization. U.S. way of working in an ecosystem is by inventing digital start up,” Arief said.

He said he was convinced Indonesia could win in global competition in creative industry given the fact that the country has been able to maintain its position in the 21st in various cultural events in the world.

He said Indonesia has cultural values that could be commercialized including in culinary. Unfortunately until now Indonesia has nothing to show off as it has no courage and determination to determine including in culinary.

“Indonesia has no national food. Vietnam has pho, Thailand has tom yam, and South Korea has kimchi. Each country has something to show off . We have a lot but we have no courage to decide and determine one. Therefore, I decide to determine soto. Hopefully it is accepted. Soto has great variety . We hope it is identical with Indonesia,” Arief Yahya said.

Arief Yahya welcomed the second National Gastronomy Dialog and Wakatobi Culinary Promotion ceremonies aimed at boosting Indonesias culinary tourism industry.

Arief said gastronomy has important role in tourism industry as tourists spend much for foods and drinks beside for flight tickets, hotels and souvenirs.

He said culinary is an major factor to determine success or failure in attracting tourists, citing Batam relies on culinary festivals to attract cross-border tourists from Singapore and Malaysia.

The National Gastronomy Dialog with the theme of From Food to Root ; The Rise of Gastronomy Tourism, is organized by AGI in cooperation with the Tourism Ministry . It served as a forum of discussion and exchange of experience to promote Indonesian gastronomy tourism.

The Wakatobi Culinary Promotion is part of an attempt to promote the Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi, as a tourist destination in the country, one of 10 priority destinations to be developed as new Bali.

Promotion through culinary is expected to help introduce Wakatobi as a major tourist destinations among foreign as well as domestic tourists.

The promotion of Wakatobi culinary was highlighted with cooking contest of students of Tourism Institute in Jakarta.

Jakarta, 1 March 2017.

With hundreds of thousands of flowers now decorating the room, the House of Representatives’ Plenary Hall is ready to welcome Saudi King Salman bin Abdulazis Al Saud, who will visit the legislature to speak before thousands of invitees on Thursday.

A red carpet has been stretched out and a special chair and table prepared with a special microphone erected for the king to give a 10-minute speech. He is scheduled to speak in front of 1,500 guests, including ministers, ambassadors, political party elites and religious figures.

The King is scheduled to arrive at the House at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Zulkifli Hasan and Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Speaker Mohammad Saleh will welcome him as he steps out of his car.

Entering the lobby of Nusantara building, House Speaker Setya Novanto will then wait for him to sign an official visit document on the prepared table, with a background of gebyok (a Javanese “wooden wall”) fully decorated with flowers.

A documentary about the visit of former King Faisal to Indonesia 47 years ago will also be screened to mark the event. Setya will give a welcome speech, followed by a speech by the King in Arabic.

The King will only be at the House for 30 minutes, before leaving at 13:30.

Damayanti, the House secretariat general’s deputy chairman for hearings said that no new furniture had been prepared. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia aides have visited the House four times to check on the preparations.

“They only want to ensure that all arrangements are made to make the King comfortable, given that he is already 81 years old,” Damayanti said. (rin)

Article :  Jakarta Will Be Free of Floods by 2022 : Deputy Governor

Jakarta, 22 February 2017.

Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat is optimistic that the current five-year flooding cycle will end this year, after observing that the recent flooding did not cause severe problems like in 2012.

He said the capital may be free from flooding by 2022 if the provincial and central government remain consistent in normalizing rivers in Jakarta, such as the Ciliwung, Cisadane, Krukut, Kalimalang and Sunter.

“Jakarta may be free from flooding within the next five years,” Djarot said after inspecting the Karet floodgate in Petamburan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/02).

“If we are consistent in normalizing the rivers, [Jakarta] would be free [of floods]. Although the normalization process has yet to be completed, the number of flood-prone areas in the capital has been reduced significantly,” he added.

Djarot said river normalization would not proceed smoothly without the cooperation of people living along riverbanks.

He said these residents must be willing to relocate to state-funded apartments, or if they legally own the land, they must sell it to the provincial administration.

“The duty of the Jakarta administration is to procure land. As long as the riverbanks are not clear of structures, normalization will not happen,” Djarot said.

Less Flooding in East Jakarta

Cipinang Muara and Cipinang Melayu in East Jakarta, which always experience heavy flooding during the five-year cycle, have been inundated on a smaller scale so far this year, compared to 2002, 2007 and 2012.

The Eastern Flood Canal (BKT) will be built in this area.

“The normalization of the Sunter River is yet to be completed, as is the Ciliwung River. These are included in the BKT. If [the normalization] is accelerated, [flooding] will automatically be reduced if the water is directed to the BKT,” Djarot said.

There were around 2,200 unmanaged flood-prone areas in Jakarta in 2012, which paralyzed the capital when it was hit by flooding at the time.

“This year, we saw improvements compared to 2012. We can see it from fewer flooded areas, shorter inundation periods and fewer people having to be evacuated, as well as the height of the water that flooded the streets or housing complexes,” Djarot said.

The Jakarta administration initiated the river normalization plan under the leadership of now-President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, who was his deputy at the time.

Ahok has continued the program after he was inaugurated as governor to replace Jokowi in 2014.

As a result, the number of flood-prone areas in Jakarta have been reduced to only 400 by 2016.

Only 80 areas have experienced recurring flooding so far this year.

Jakarta Election 2017

Article : Why Jakarta Election Could Change the Face of Indonesia.

16 February 2017

(CNN)It’s an election that could change Indonesia.

Voters in the capital of Jakarta went to the polls Wednesday to elect a new governor.

But more is at stake than who governs the sprawling, chaotic metropolis of 30 million people.

The contest between the incumbent, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ethnic Chinese Christian commonly known as Ahok, and his two Muslim opponents has raised questions over whether Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, will remain a moderate Muslim society.

It could even determine who will be the next president of Indonesia after the 2019 national election.

Preliminary exit polls and surveys have Ahok and former Education and Culture Minister Anies Baswedan as the top two candidates, with neither breaking the 50% threshold to prevent a runoff.

A result won’t be known for two weeks, and if no one wins a majority, a second round of voting will take place April 19.

“If (incumbent) Ahok (were) to lose, other than politicians using religion as a tool, Islamists will use it to change Islam into Indonesia to their own meaning, that isn’t Indonesian,” Tobias Basuki, a researcher at the Indonesian think tank the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told CNN.

“They will gain an upper hand. (This) will be the first litmus test.”

Polling data before Wednesday’s election showed Ahok and Baswedan were expected to face off in the second round in April.

(….)

Whatever the result, Ahok will have to bear some of the blame for his brash, confrontational style of governing, Fealy said.

“He’s a very combative, outspoken, reckless kind of character who has achieved a lot for Jakarta, but he’s a character who has created a lot of antipathy toward him,” he said.

Lost in Translation : Ad Campaigns Go Wrong

KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken)

Puffs

puffs squline lost in translation

Pepsi

pepsi squline

Slogan pepsi “we bring you back to life” atau kami akan membawa mu kembali hidup sangatlah terkenal, namun di Cina, slogan mereka mempunyai arti yang menakutkan yaitu “we bring your ancestors back from the grave” (kami akan membawa leluhurmu kembali dari kubur).
